Units from West Friendship VFD and surrounding departments responded this evening for an accident that took the life of a 13 year old boy. At 17:05, the rescue alarm was sounded for Route 32 and River Road, alerting Engine 32, Paramedic 36, and Chief 3, as well as units from Sykesville Freedom District VFD, Lisbon VFC, Ellicott City VFD (Bethany Lane), and Fifth District VFD.
On arrival units found two vehicles involved, a passenger car and a flatbed tow truck. Three patients in the passenger car were trapped, and all were Priority 1 patients. Chief 3 established the command and quickly requested aviation for transport.
After units were able to extricate the patients, Paramedic 36 treated one of the Priority 1 juvenile patients and transported to Howard County General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Crews from Paramedic 45 treated one Priority 1 patient and transferred care to Maryland State Police Trooper 1 for transport to Shock Trauma. Paramedic 55 treated and transferred care of a pediatric Priority 1 patient to United States Park Police Eagle 1 for transport to Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. The driver of the tow truck was not injured.
The accident is under investigation by the Howard County Police Traffic Enforcement Section, but preliminary reports indicate that the passenger vehicle was attempting to turn left from River Road onto southbound Route 32 when it collided with the northbound truck.
Units cleared at 18:58.
