| HENRYTON, Md. (AP) -- Firefighters from three counties controlled a fire Wednesday morning at a building inside the abandoned Henryton Hospital Center complex in Carroll County.
The fire was reported about 4:15 a.m. at the complex in the 7900 block of Henryton Road.
The site is just inside the Carroll County line, near Marriottsville in Howard County.
Sykesville firefighters say the complex has no electricity and has been the scene of several suspicious fires in recent years.
The hospital is a former state mental health facility. Firefighters say the fire was contained inside the old theater section of the main building. Firefighters were expected to remain for several hours to extinguish hot spots and occasional flare-ups.
Henryton Center blaze one of several suspicious ones there, fire department says
A fire that damaged an abandoned hospital in Carroll County early this morning was contained and brought under control by 8 a.m., according to the volunteer fire department in Sykesville.
The fire was first reported about 4:15 a.m. at an old theater in the main building of the Henryton Center in Marriottsville, the Freedom District Fire Department said in a statement posted on its Web site this morning.
About 80 firefighters from Carroll, Baltimore and Howard counties battled the blaze. There were no reports of injuries.
Today's fire was one several suspicious blazes at the complex in recent years, the department said, including ones in the same building that burned this morning.
The Henryton Center opened in the 1920s on 46 acres overlooking the Patapsco River and once treated African-Americans who suffered from tuberculous. It was converted to a psychiatric hospital before closing in the 1980s.
