WFVFD Mourns Life Member Ronald VanSant

The WFVFD regrets to announce the passing of Life Member Ronald VanSant. Mr. VanSant joined the WFVFD in 1962 and served for 28 years. He held many positions including Firefighter, First Lieutenant, Captain, President, and Board of Directors member. Ronald A. VanSant, age 71, of Owings Mills, MD passed away suddenly on Wednesday, October 16, 2019. Born November 1, 1947, in West Friendship, MD he was the son of Allen M. VanSant of Pikesville and the late Doris Shipley VanSant. Ronnie had been a plumber for most of his life. He was a long time member of St. James United Methodist Church, Marriottsville and was a member of the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department for 28 years. Surviving in addition to his father is his daughter Lori VanSant of Sykesville. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8pm on Monday, October 21, 2019 at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at 1pm at Mt. View Cemetery, 2150 Mt. View Rd., Marriottsville, MD 21104. Condolences to the family of Ronald VanSant who passed away on Oct. 16. When we moved to West Friendship in 1975, one of the first service persons who showed up to fix a multitude of leaking pin hole pipes was Ronnie VanSant. As a life member of the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Saint James United Methodist Church, VanSant was known to many in the community. Affable, kind, clever and a top notch plumber, VanSant became an immediate part of our life in West Friendship. He visited our place as a plumber more than I’d like to recall. Always reassuring to brand new home owners of a very old fixer upper. Over the years, Ron would often call on me to write up something in my weekly column at the Howard County Times. His aim was to highlight that person he called about. Now Ron, it’s your turn for mention here. You will be missed. Your kindness over the years is never to be forgotten. Sympathy to your wonderful father Allen and your beloved daughter Lori. Rest in peace. Lisa Peklo
