Units responded mutual aid today to Carroll County for a working house fire. Firefighters from the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department were alerted for an odor of smoke in an apartment in the 900 block of Marimich Court in Eldersburg; upon their arrival they observed heavy smoke on the second floor and requested the working fire dispatch bringing Engine 31 to the scene at 09:32. 31's crew worked with Sykesville's Engine 123 to contain the fire to a second floor bedroom where a deceased occupant of the home was located. This was the 70th fatal fire in 2018 in Maryland. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal.
