Early this morning units responded for a motor vehicle collision on I-70. At 04:21, Station 3 was alerted for the rescue with unknown injuries on I-70 westbound at the weigh station in West Friendship. Reports indicated that a tractor trailer was jackknifed and off the road. Upon arrival units located a two vehicle collision involving a tractor trailer and a passenger vehicle. The driver of the passenger car was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the truck refused transport. Units searched the immediate area for additional patients using thermal imaging cameras; none were located.
DFRS Special Ops and the Maryland Department of the Environment's Emergency Response Division were requested to respond due to leaking fuel from the truck's saddle tanks.
Initial investigation by the Maryland State Police indicates the passenger vehicle struck a deer and was disabled in the roadway when it was struck by the tractor trailer. Westbound I-70 remained closed for several hours while the Maryland State Police investigated and the debris was removed from the roadway.
