At 10:47 this morning, units were alerted for a rescue with unknown injuries on Baltimore National Pike. Callers advised that a vehicle ran into the rear of a dump truck, bringing Tower 3, Engine 82, Paramedic 25, Ambulance 26, and Chief 3B to the scene. Upon arrival Chief 3B found a medical transport van with heavy damage and one passenger trapped on the ramp from westbound Route 40 to westbound I-70. Chief 3B established the command and upgraded the call to a full rescue assignment. Tower 3 made quick work of the extrication and the passenger was transported priority 2 to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore by Paramedic 25, while the van driver was transported priority 3 to Howard County General Hospital by Ambulance 26.
Investigation revealed that the van ran off onto the right shoulder, striking a trailer attached to a dump truck. The van traveled up the trailer, went airborne and struck the rear of the dump truck, then rolled over on the roadway where it came to rest upright. The scene was turned over to Howard County Police and Maryland State Police. Units cleared at 11:24.
