| Members were kept busy today responding to calls amid severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and a tornado warning. At 12:07, units were dispatched for the "small oil tanker overturned" on Route 32. Arriving units found a tractor trailer off the roadway on its roof on Route 32 next to the firehouse. The driver, while conscious and alert, required extrication from the cab of the truck. Tower 3 and Engine 71 were able to extricate the driver through the driver's door; he was transported priority 3 to Howard County General Hospital by Paramedic 35.
The truck, carrying a full load of urea ammonium nitrate (liquid fertilizer), was leaking from its saddle tanks and trailer. Special Operations and the Maryland Department of the Environment's Emergency Response Division were requested to offload the product from the trailer and the diesel fuel from the saddle tanks. Units remained on scene until the truck and trailer were removed.
Then at 17:31 units responded to westbound I-70 between the weigh station and Route 97 for a rescue with entrapment. Frederick County Chief 15 was on the scene and reported a two vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer. Engine 31 arrived to find a jackknifed tractor trailer off the roadway and a minivan in lane three. Engine 31 established a safety buffer while the single occupant of the minivan was assessed for injuries. After removal from the minivan the driver was packaged and transported to Shock Trauma in Baltimore priority 2 by Paramedic 45 since MSP Aviation was not flying due to the weather. The truck driver refused medical treatment.
The tractor trailer, while carrying no hazardous materials, did suffer a ruptured passenger side saddle tank so the MDE Emergency Response Division was once again requested to mitigate the diesel fuel spillage. Units cleared shortly thereafter. |
