| Company 3 assisted Sykesville with a well involved vacant house on the grounds of the old Henryton Center today. At 10:43 the station was alerted for a working building fire at 8000 Henryton Road. Engine 31, Tower 3, Tanker 3, Tanker 34, Water Supply 11 (now housed at Station 3), Paramedic 36, and Chief 3 responded and were first arriving units.
Once on location units found a two story single family vacant dwelling fully involved. Engine 31 pulled two attack lines for the defensive operation and Tower 3 utilized the master stream, supplied by the tankers and Water Supply 11 which immediately set up to pull water from the Patapsco River on Marriottsville Road at the county line. Chief 3 had the command.
During the incident, Water Supply 11 witnessed a collision of two vehicles on Marriottsville Road and assisted them until Carroll Paramedic 127 and Brush 125 arrived. Units cleared at 14:08.
The Henryton State Hospital Center was opened in 1922 to treat African Americans suffering from tuberculosis and closed in 1985 after serving as a facility to treat the mentally disabled. The WFVFD continues to urge the State of Maryland to allocate the funds to raze the remaining structures as they are an extreme safety hazard to the public and the firefighters who must respond there. |
