It is with unbelievable sadness that we announce the passing of Fire Chief Howard Mitchell “Mickey” Day.
Born April 21,1961 at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Mickey was a lifelong resident of Howard County. He attended Glenelg High School and the University of Maryland, College Park, earning a bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences in 1983. He worked for many years in his family’s business, Farm and Home Service, Inc. as a general manager.
Mickey joined the WFVFD in 1977 as a teen and rose through the ranks, serving as a Firefighter, EMT, First Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Chief, and Chief, a position he held for 25 years until his passing. Mickey was a Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute instructor, serving as a mentor and passing his knowledge on to countless new firefighters.
Chief Day was also an active member in the Howard County Volunteer Firefighters Association, most recently serving as President.
Mickey was very involved in the greater West Friendship and Howard County community. He began his association with the Howard County Fair as a child, raising cows and pigs at his grandmother’s house as a 4H member to show at the Fair. He later became a member of the Howard County Fair Association board of directors and served as its President for over ten years. In addition, he was a member of the Howard County Agricultural Land Preservation Board, serving as Chairperson while also working closely with the Howard County Farm Bureau.
This brief write-up is really inadequate and unable to convey what the loss of Mickey means to his family, to the fire service, and to Howard County. His heart and soul was with his family and the fire department and we are all so much better for having him in our lives. I am lucky to have known him and call him a friend.
